According to information discovered in the Android P developer preview, Google getting ready to change the name of its Android Wear platform, used for smartwatches and other wearable devices to simply Wear OS.
Android Wear is referred to only as Wear OS in the preview, and is illustrated by a new logo featuring the letter W. If a name change does come, it will follow the death of Android Pay, as the payment system became part of Google Pay.
By removing the word Android from the name, Google is making it clear the wearable platform is featured on devices which operate with iOS too, and not just Android phones. It may also be planning to revamp the software to increase its popularity.
While the name has been found in Android P, there is no indication when — or even if — Google will officially change the name.
However, the Google I/O developer conference in May could bring new details on Android Wear’s future.
